WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A BREAST REDUCTION

Women list various reasons for wanting a breast reduction. For example, those who have large breasts, known as macromastia, suffer many physical symptoms, most commonly: back, shoulder, and neck pain, headaches and shoulder grooving.

Another complaint cited by women is limited clothing options. Many women find it challenging to buy clothing that best suits their shapes due to large breasts most commonly suit jackets or tops not matching pants or skirt sizes in common sets.  Reduced breasts can also prove to be a real confidence booster especially in younger women who are self conscious of their appearance in social settings.

Breast reduction surgery is also a practical option for women who experience poor exercise tolerance due to having large breasts. Specific workouts, such as jogging and running, can be quite painful in those cases.

Dr. Stile performs breast reductions for women whose quality of life is limited by these and other reasons for wishing to have smaller and firmer breasts.

BREAST REDUCTION RECOVERY TIMELINE

A reduction mammoplasty is a surgical procedure that requires some downtime, and a recovery timeline must be followed to achieve optimal results.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons gives a detailed guide on the recovery process for cosmetic breast reduction surgery. The following is a brief synopsis of the recovery timeline:

SAME-DAY POST-OP

Once the breast reduction surgery is complete, a surgical support bra must get worn to minimize swelling. Dr. Stile will provide full instructions on how to care for the breasts, including taking any medications to aid the healing process.

It’s not uncommon for women to go down one to three cup sizes once they’ve had breast reduction surgery.

ONE WEEK POST-OP

By now, the healing process should be well underway. Breast reduction surgery patients can typically return to work in another week’s time but only conducting light physical duties.

ONE MONTH POST-OP

Breast reduction patients can now resume all physical activities as they could before the breast reduction procedure.

ONE YEAR POST-OP

The recovery process should be complete with no pain or swelling. Nipple sensitivity and sensation should now be back to normal.

AM I A CANDIDATE FOR A BREAST REDUCTION?

You could be an ideal candidate for a breast reduction if you’re unhappy with the size of your breasts. For instance, they might be too large and cause you physical pain, restrict the exercises you can do, or are disproportionate to your body size.

A breast reduction could also be perfect for you if you experience poor posture, or irritation and rashes on your skin underneath your bra due to a large breast size.
