When Can I Sleep On My Side After Breast Augmentation?

Over time our breasts naturally sag and lose volume due to age, but many women experience volume loss for various reasons. Some may lose volume due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, and weight loss. 

Others may have lost their breasts after a mastectomy or lumpectomy, struggle with smaller breasts due to genetics, or want to correct uneven breast sizes. Dr. Stile accepts patients over 18 who want to improve their breast size and shape through breast augmentation. 

WHAT IS BREAST AUGMENTATION?

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery to help women increase their breast size. Patients may choose various sizes for their breast implants and between two types: silicone or saline-filled. Depending on your preferences and desired outcome, Dr. Stile may recommend one implant type to you over another. 

At Stile Aesthetics, Dr. Stile often uses his dual-plane method for natural-looking results. In most facilities, there are two methods of placing an implant in the breast: behind the breast tissue or under the chest muscle. The dual-plane method sets the upper two-thirds of the implant below the pectoralis major muscle and the lower third above the chest muscle.

This technique creates more natural-looking, soft breasts. Most patients say their breasts move more naturally during physical activity with the dual-plane method.

HOW LONG IS RECOVERY FROM BREAST AUGMENTATION?

Immediately after surgery, you’ll be transferred to a recovery room until the general anesthesia fades. You will likely be groggy and experience tightness or muscle aches around the pectorals. Most patients go home after a few hours. The surgeon will wrap your breasts with a surgical bra or elastic band to support them during recovery. 

During the first week, you will experience discomfort and may need to take prescription pain medications. You may experience pain, discomfort, and mild bleeding at the incision sites. Please ensure plenty of rest and reduce any movement involving the arms and chest.

We recommend patients sleep on their back for two to six weeks after surgery, depending on their healing progress. Sleeping on your side or stomach can cause deformation of the breasts. Sleeping on your back allows your implants to settle down. 

Most patients return to work after two weeks, but more physically strenuous jobs may take over three weeks. Complete recovery may take up to two months.
